Five iconic Irish spots have ranked among the most popular Game of Thrones locations in the UK and Ireland.
With the release of the new prequel series House of the Dragon, fans of the show are keen to learn more about the making of the hit fantasy drama.
So, with fans keen to check out the real-life locations of some of their favourite scenes, the new study has revealed which spots have proven most popular.
Coinciding with the release of House of the Dragon, Google searches for ‘Game of Thrones filming locations’ increased by 153% in the past 12 months. Meanwhile, searches for ‘House of Dragons filming locations’ increased by an incredible 536% since the first episode aired.
Using data from Instagram, entertainment experts from Irish casino analysed a list of filming locations from both shows to discover how many photos had been posted at each location around the UK and Ireland.
Much of the filming for Game of Thrones took place in the north of Ireland. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that iconic spots in Northern Ireland featured highly on the list.
The Dark Hedges in County Antrim came out top on the list of popular Game of Thrones locations. According to Slotbox data, 70,297 photos were posted to the social media platform at the spot that acted as the King’s Road in season two.
Dunluce Castle on the Causeway Coast, which featured as House Greyjoy in season two, ranked in second place. Fans posted an incredible 38,862 photos at this historic coastal castle.
Hopping across the water to the only site from outside of Northern Ireland to feature, Doune Castle in Scotland ranked third. The Scottish castle was used as the set for Winterfell during season one, and 20,456 fans posted pictures here.
Closing out the top five, Castle Ward, which featured as Winterfell in season eight, and Tollymore Forest, which featured as the Forest of Winterfell in season one, both in County Down ranked fourth and fifth.
House of the Dragon hit our screens last month. Since then, fans have been searching where they can see the sets for themselves.
Google searches for House of the Dragon filming locations increased by over five times since the first episode aired. So, Slotbox analysed online data to reveal the most popular spots.
While five Irish spots ranked among the most popular Game of Thrones locations, the majority of the filming for the new series took place across the water in England.
St Michael’s Mount, Kynance Cove, and Holywell Bay Beach, all in Cornwall, claimed the top three spots. Meanwhile, Cave Dale and Eldon Hill in Derbyshire came in fourth and fifth.
