Largs Raft Race and Disco Aid memories from 1985 – Largs and Millport Weekly News

In this week’s delve into the archives we head back to the year 1985.
After Live Aid was a huge success in raising funds for impoverished people living in Africa, we now had Disco Aid as local fundraisers got on the dancefloor to boogie their way through the night.

Ingrid Cook and Fiona McBride undertook a sponsored marathon disco session at The Charleston Hotel to raise money for Africa’s starving people.

Local musician Robert Friel was the dancing partner for the big venture.
The World’s Strongest Man was flexing his muscles as he visited Kelburn Country Centre.
John Pall Sigmarrson was on hand to open the Viking Festival and gave a helping hand to the Danish Export group to help them get a better view of things!
The individual winners of the Largs Youth Panel disco championships held in Barrfields were Fiona McGregor (under 12s) of Fairlie, and Jennifer Osbourne (under 14s) and Wilma Soto (under 16s), both of Skelmorlie 
It was a case of take your partner by the hand at the traditional barn dance held by the Largs Young Farmers group which was always a great night out.
Largs RNLI member Colin Grant and his crew had great fun taking part in the Viking Raft Race.
And ten Sinclair C5 electric vehicles were introduced to Cumbrae by Tony McCallum of the Westbourne Hotel and were proving popular with bookings sold out in advance.
